Five Series I Will Not Finish

A post everyone has done and I want to do it too.

I never abandon books. It’s something I’ve discussed before (more on it HERE ), but if I start a book, I’ll finish it, even if I am not enjoying myself. Same goes for series. I gotta know what happens, and sometimes I even enjoy hating on a book. But there are series that I will not finish ever. I either hated the books I’ve read so far, or I just lost interest in the series. Whatever the case may be, here are the series that I won’t ever finish:

BUT before we start, let’s do a PSA. If I don’t like a book you don’t like, that does not mean I don’t like you. If you feel the need to convince me to read this, by all means try to, but be nice about it. I’m sure that there are books I like that you hate. And that’s great! We all have different experiences. That’s what’s amazing about books & literature. Now we can start. These are in no particular order.

1. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

I read the first three books, and even Fairest, but I just can’t bring myself to finish this series. I remember I picked these up when the hype surrounding them was HUGE, and I was beyond disappointed. I felt like the world was so underdeveloped and the story dragged so much. I loved the ending of each book, but it was almost excruciating to get to it. The books were to long, and I felt like nothing actually happened. Cinder was my favorite in the series, and everything kind of went downhill from there. By the time Winter came out, I was over it, and could not bring myself to finish a huge book that I knew was going to drag on and on for me. So yeah, never finishing this one. Although, given the fact that there’s a huge fandom for this series, I am always intrigued when I see edits of it, but never enough to read it.

2. Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Ugh, I never wanted to like a book more than I liked this one. But everything went wrong with it. This is advertised as a dystopian, but this is a FULL ON Romance book. Which is fine, but I need to know that, and not think that I am getting dystopian action. Of which there is nothing. There’s zero world building. I hated the writing. It was too flowery and I always felt like it was trying too damn hard. The characters were flat and did nothing for me. Actually, no. They did something to me, they annoyed me to the point of almost chucking the book across the room. Another one of those books were I expected so much, and got so very little. And I hated the X-men-esque aspect of this. I do adore the covers though.

3. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas

Again, so very sorry about this. I was so excited when I started reading this, which made the reading experience even more painful. First of all, I do not want to be TOLD stuff, instead of being SHOWN stuff. I don’t care that you tell me Celaena is a badass, SHOW ME. Celaena is probably the most annoying character in all of history for me. She is a supposed badass, but the first thing we see her do is fret about her looks, AFTER SHE JUST GOT OUT OF SLAVERY. She is worried that the pretty prince will think she’s dirty or ugly. Seriously? And then, she is in this competition where we’re told she is the bomb.com and yet every single fight scene where we can actually see that for ourselves is SKIPPED over and we just get told “…oh, and btw she won the challenge because she is so awesome”. Please stop. Besides the fact that she is so annoying, the world building is non existent, the magic system and the plot are so muddled and underdeveloped and I felt constantly manipulated by Maas’ writing. I get that every author manipulates you, BUT I DON’T WANT TO FEEL THAT while I am reading. I am supposed to be oblivious to that fact. But every thing in this book felt like it was designed to rile an emotional response from me so that I get attached to characters. And when I heard what happens in later books, this just confirmed my thoughts even more so. Chaol was the only character I felt any connection to, and we all know the drama behind that. Sorry for the rant and for disliking everyone’s favorite book.

4. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

Another popular one that I hated. The premise is fine and interesting, but again, very little world building. What really made me set on never finishing the series is the fact that  I hated the character in these books. Detested them really. I didn’t feel for them at all. They could’ve been plummeting to their deaths, and I just thought meh. I couldn’t care less. They had no depth to them whatsoever. They were just dull, plain and one-dimensional. I honestly can’t point at one characteristic of the heroine and say “there’s something that defines her” because there isn’t any. At all. Except maybe her shallowness, but that’s more due to the society she lives in than anything else. Her character just doesn’t offer anything. For me, it was completely unrelatable. And when she met David, her “love”, she really started getting on my nerves. One moment they didn’t even acknowledge each other, but the next they were in love. I could’ve gone past it, if I just felt it, but I didn’t. I was reading about their shared moments and again I was just like meh. Oh, and David? Even worse than Tally, even more plain and uninteresting. Obviously, the secondary characters are non-existent. They are there, for the sake of the story, but they don’t bring anything to it. Just a huge letdown and I am not even mildly interested in what happens in this series.

5. A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R.Martin

First of all, I love the TV show. An all time favorite. And I really wanted to get into the books. I want to know what the show is missing. I read the first book, thought it was good. But I tried reading the second one five times. FIVE. And every time I get bored out of my mind, and can’t get past the third of the book. I am so sad about this, but the books are just too dense and descriptive for me. I can’t deal. They just bore me to no end. There I said it. Love the show though.
