A feature in which I recommend you books based on your favorite character.
A while back I introduced a new feature in which I recommend you books that remind me of a certain character. So it’s either books I think they as a character would enjoy or that remind me of the character itself. The first in the installment was obviously Ronan Lynch, and this time I am doing Hermione’s reading list.
Hermione is one of my favorite character of all time and she is one of the first characters that I really related to. And Harry Potter’s obviously my favorite series of all time. As for Hermione’s reading list, I feel like her list would be dominated by non fiction, feminist writing and classics. So without further ado, here’s Hermione Granger’s Reading List.
1. Dear Ijeawele, or a Feminist Manifesto in Fifteen Suggestions by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie
This is a book Adichie wrote as a response to her friend asking her how to raise her daughter as a feminist and it’s a book that debunks myths about women but also goes really deep into the sexual politics of today. I feel like this is something that Hermione or anyone who loves her as a character would definitely enjoy.
2. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
This is a modern classic and a book everyone knows about. But a feminist dystopian is something that I feel Hermione would really love.
3. Nabokov’s Favorite Word Is Mauve: What the Numbers Reveal About the Classics, Bestsellers, and Our Own Writing by Ben Blatt
This is a non fiction book about books, and I feel that any lover of books like Hermione would love this. It’s a sort of statistical overview of famous writers’ work. It showcases what words they use and how often and it’s a fascinating read for anyone who loves literature.
4. Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor
This has been dubbed the Nigerian Harry Potter AND it has a female main character. That speaks Hermione to me so much. I can imagine her exploring and reading about magic in different settings and cultures and this book is steeped in Nigerian myths, folklore and magic.
5. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
I feel that Hermione as a social justice advocate would really love this. It’s a book that is powerful and angry and so insightful, with a wonderful main character and I think Hermione would really like this. If you’re interested, you can read my full review on it HERE.
6. Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Ending with a classic, Jane Austen seems like the sort of writer Hermione would enjoy. She wrote women who were very ahead of their time and I think Hermione would really appreciate Lizzie Bennet. I also feel like Hermione is a romantic and obviously the hate-to-love relationship is something she can relate to. It fits perfectly.
So those are my recommendations! Hope you enjoyed this, let me know what you think of these books and if you have any recs of your own, I’d love to hear them!

Ooh, this feature is such a great idea! I love it. And your Hermione books are perfect. I agree that she would be a big social justice advocate.

Neat idea. I like it!
And I think your list for Hermione is spot on. Although, I also can’t help but wonder if she’d ever want to just hide away somewhere and read a guilty-pleasure book, just to give herself a break.

Thank you! And yeah, I agree, perhaps she would have an ocassional guilty pleasure, as everyone does 😊

The Hermione books look more like Emma Watson books, but then again, she always said she relates so much to her that she’s not acting.

I entirely based the recs on Hermione, she fights for the rights of house elves, she talks a lot about international friendships in the fourth book, she yearns for knowledge etc., but I guess I see your point, and like you said, they are similiar

Loved the movie version of Pride and Prejudice but I’m ashamed to say I still haven’t read that classic. But this is a great list!

To tell you the truth, I might SLIGHTLY prefer the movie to the book 😅 But it’s still a wonderful novel. Thank you!

Keira Knightley does give an impressive performane as Lizzy! Loved that movie to bits!! Wait.. are there any other movie adaptations aside from that one? 😀 You might be referring to another and here I am fangirling about Keira’s Lizzy..

There’s a BBC Mini series with Collin as Darcy, but I prefer the Keira one by miles! She is absolutely amazing as Lizzie, I agree!

What mini series??! Gotta google that later cause the movie is the only one I have seen.

You should, a lot of people like that one better, although I find that to be ridiculous 😂
