Nina Zenik’s Reading List

A feature in which I recommend you books based on your favorite character.

Welcome to the newest installment in my Reading Lists Feature, a series of posts where I compose reading lists for and inspired by different characters. These are all books that I feel fit into the character’s aesthetic and personality, but also books I feel those characters would love to read. You can check the previous posts (Ronan Lynch, Hermione, Ron and Kaz BrekkerHERE.

The art is my favorite Nina art. SO GORGEOUS. Click the image to go to the artist’s website!

Even though I think all of Six of Crows characters are wonderful, Nina is by far my favorite. She is so sensuous and charming, spunky and really in touch with her powers. Also, she has a wonderful friendship with Inej and I love their relationship. She is kickass. THIS is the definition of a powerful female character.

So that’s the vibe we’re going for, okay? Let’s do it!

1. Wonder Woman: Warbringer by Leigh Bardugo

Nothing like a Bardugo book for a Bardugo character. Of course Nina would enjoy this. Princess Diana kicks ass, and so does Nina. Female friendships, and just general girl power. Nina would absolutely LOVE it.

2. Truthwitch by Susan Dennard

More female friendships. I feel like Safi and Iseult could very well translate to Nina and Inej. But this celebrates female friendships, and I love it. There’s also really great magic, and I personally love Iseult’s magic and the way she does it. Also there’s great action here and all around fun. Just like Nina.

3. Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud: The Rise and Reign of the Unruly Woman by Anne Helen Petersen

I don’t know why, but I feel Nina would really be into pop culture. This is an essay collection on unruly women – those who are too fat, or too loud, or just plain too much. It explores how society brands women like that and how it treats them, and how different female celebrities are breaking barriers. I think Nina is an unruly women, in the best possible way, and I think she would definitely see herself in these essays.

4. The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

I think Nina would enjoy an occasional Romance novel. Especially one as well written as this. It’s a hate-to-love romance, and there’s so much tension, just like in the case of Nina and Matthias. It’s basically the ultimate Nina x Matthias pick and I am here for it.

5. Giant Days by John Allison

Ah yes, my favorite comic series. It’s about friendship and feminism, getting through university, making bad choices and just life in general. Incredibly funny, heartfelt and smart. All things Nina is and would love.

6. The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Now, this isn’t an immediately obvious Nina pick. But I think Nina would enjoy Evelyn Hugo as a character. A passionate woman who knows what she wants? I think this book is rather emotional as well, and even has some forbidden romance. Saucy. I think Nina could get behind that.

So those are my Nina picks! Let me know how you like them, and let me know if you have any picks of your own!
