Books I Loved As a Teenager

Let’s throw it back, shall we?

I always think about rereading some of my favorite books I liked when I was younger. But then I get caught up in other newer releases and it never happens. Plus, I am kind of scared I am gonna hate the books now, or find them disappointing, so I don’t want to ruin my experience of them. So, in lack of rereading, I am just gonna talk to you about some books I loved when I was a teenager!

The Princess Diaries Series by Meg Cabot

This is one of my most beloved series of all time. And this is one I reread recently and loved just as much as when I was younger. There’s so much pop culture reference and just so much high school drama, but I love it. Mia is a funny, kind of anxious and prone to freak outs teenage princess and she sort of juggles her new found celebrity and high school life. The book is full of humor and life and wonderful characters. And Michael Moscovitz is practically amazing.

The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare

I devoured this when I first read it. These books are so addicting, and there’s just something compulsive to reading them. I read the series back to back and I was obsessed with it. I hated some parts of it, like Clary as a main character, or the incest plotline, but overall, I loved this. This is one that I know I would hate if  I reread it, so I  am probably never going to. But there’s just so many fond memories tying me to this series. Plus I loved Sebastian Morgenstern as a villian and I am one of the few people who prefer this series to The Dark Artifices series.

The Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan

I adore this series and all of it’s spin offs and just generally Riordan’s books. I think the concept of them is genius, I loved meeting Riordan’s versions of the Greek gods and I find the plots of the PJO and Heroes of Olympus series to be really tight. I also adore the characters, every single one of them. From Percy to Nico to Annabeth, I just find them all to be spectacular. One of the series that I really want to reread ASAP.

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell

I remember very little about this book, except for the fact that I was head over heels for it. I remember being so surprised and baffled by how good Rainbow Rowell is at writing and how real and true her characters are.  I think she’s so good at writing dialogue and making it seem really natural and normal. I just love her. I love all of her books, and Fangirl is one I reread the most, and love the most, but Eleanor and Park was the first book by her I read and it’s the one I tie to my teen years the most.

Sarah Dessen’s Books

I used to adore Sarah Dessen. She writes these really great contemporaries, that offer a lot. There’s romance there for sure, but there’s also a lot of different important topics there and I loved all of her books I read. My personal favorite is Along for the Ride and it’s a book that’s full of these wonderful friendships and feminist ideas and a lot of reflection on female friendships and girl-on-girl hate. Plus a really great romance. Go read it. I also reread that one fairly often.

The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I cannot begin to tell you how obsessed I was with this, like everyone else. This was my first real introduction to YA and it’s something that led me to the online book community and I think that’s why I love it so much. Plus, I think this is the strongest dystopian out there and I think it’s so smart. The last book was sucky, and I actually would have preferred if Katniss ended up alone, but overall a wonderful series, one I definitely want to reread soon.

Divergent Series by Veronica Roth

I know people only liked the first book, but I personally loved the whole series. I love how the series became an entirely different thing than it was in the first book. So much changed and so many new things were introduced and I really loved it. Oh and I didn’t mind the ending of Allegiant. I could have done without it, but I did not mind it like other people did.  I think that possibly this wouldn’t be something I would enjoy today, but back in the day, I loved it.

Blue is for Nightmares by Laurie Faria Stolarz

I adored this series and not a lot of people heard of it before. It’s a YA Paranormal Fantasy and it has this wicca/witchy vibe and I absolutely loved it. It’s about Stacy who starts having really bad nightmares about her best friend, and she had the same nightmares about a girl who ended up dying. I haven’t seen a lot of people talk about this and it’s something I was obsessed with. I remember little to nothing of the plot, so  I’d be curios to reread them.

Twilight by Stephanie Meyer

I can’t believe I almost forgot this one! But I loved Twilight. These were books I reread a ton of times and I loved them so so much. This is the only one on the list that makes me cringe really hard and I think I would find these books atrocious now. Especially given the fact I loved them so fiercely. My favorite was Breaking Dawn if you were wondering. Which is quite possibly the stupidest one.

So those are some of the books I loved as a teenager. Let me know if any of these were on your favorites list or let me know about some favorites of your own!

  1. OH MY GOSH, TWILIGHT!! I remember reading those books for the first time and I was sooooo in love with Edward! With the exception of the hunger games, I’ve re-read these books and they’re not as good as I remember 😦 but I did used to LOVEEEE them. This is a great post! ❤

  2. Well I’ve read and loved most of these books as …a mom LOL We had few books like these as a teenager honestly. They were either books for kids or books for adults but very few YA. That’s maybe why I read so many now? LOL

  3. Haha, I think this shows the difference between teenage boy readers vs. teenage girl readers. Granted, I’m not the biggest reader in the world–not by a long shot–but the only book from this list that I read was Percy Jackson. Didn’t read it as a teen, though, so I guess I actually read none of these as a teen. 😛
My wife loved Princess Diaries, though, and I loved Percy Jackson when I did finally read it. Fun books!

      1. That would be an interesting list, too.
I think my teen read list would be kind of a weird one anyways. When I was in Junior high, I swore myself off of reading fiction. All I read was history books, which can also be great. Lasted until college.
