Inej Ghafa’s Reading List

A feature in which I recommend you books based on your favorite character.

Welcome to the newest installment in my Reading Lists Feature, a series of posts where I compose reading lists for and inspired by different characters. These are all books that I feel fit into the character’s aesthetic and personality, but also books I feel those characters would love to read. You can check the previous posts (Ronan Lynch, Hermione, Ron, Kaz Brekker, Nina Zenik, Harry Potter and Luna LovegoodHERE.

This is one of my favorite Inej art and I think it’s stunning. Click the pic to go to the artist’s website.

Inej is one of my favorite characters ever. She is smart and extremely capable, and she’s also quite a quiet and reserved character. She is fierce and loyal and has a strong moral compass. She is also traditional and immersed in her culture, but still quite pragmatic. And she’s been through hell, but doesn’t let that define her. She’s such a nuanced character and those are all the characteristics I kept in mind with these selections. So without further ado, here’s Inej Ghafa’s Reading List.

1. The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke

This is basically Six of Crows. I am not kidding. The difference is that the group is kind of younger and lives in a movie theatre, but still. This is set in Venice AND it features a heist. It’s basically the perfect pick for any of the Dregs, but I think Inej would especially enjoy the magic and feeling of it, and I think she’d enjoy that adventurous feel of Middle Grade books. I believe that this is a great pick for Inej.

2. The Paper Menagerie and Other Stories by Ken Liu

I am not even gonna go into the fact that this has Menagerie in the title. This is a short story collection of fantasy and sci fi writing, but I think it would be great for Inej. There’s Chinese folklore mixed into this and the titular story is one I think Inej would particularly like. This is a quiet and beautifully written collection, and that is true for Inej as well.

3. The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden by Jonas Jonasson

This is entirely different in tone to anything on this list, but it’s something that would be great for Inej. It’s a story about an incredibly competent and smart girl who pushes through everything life gives her and still manages to stay true to herself and stay positive. It’s funny and heartwarming, and has a lead that you want to root for, so I think that makes it the perfect Inej pick.

4. The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson (The Mistborn trilogy)

This is on the list because I think Inej would like Vin. That’s why I put the second book, since Vin becomes more prominent in it. There’s something acrobatic in Vin’s Allomancy, and she’s also incredibly talented and competent and I think Inej would love that. Vin is also a thief, but also has an unwavering moral compass which is something that screams Inej to me. She is also really loyal, but speaks her mind and I think she and Vin would get along.

5. Beartown by Fredrik Backman

This is obviously got to be in every single one of my posts. But I think Inej would really love it. It’s quiet and reserved, but it’s also about unity and community, it has a lot of discussion about moral ambiguity. It deals with the topics of rape, but also how not to be defined by tragedy and how to get through difficult times with the support of people who love you. It’s also about loyalty and does it always work and it’s incredibly nuanced and smart, just like Inej.

6. After the Eclipse: A Mother’s Murder, the Daughter’s Search

Finally, as always, I include a non fiction book. I personally think Inej would like true crime. I think she would be into thrillers and I think she would enjoy the air of mystery surrounding true crime stories. But I think she would also enjoy something with a personal side to it. Which is why I think this is great for Inej. It’s about Sarah Perry’s mother, who was murdered while she was just a few feet away. It’s about coming to terms with loss, but also going back to the roots and trying to give sense to something horrible, but mostly it’s about a woman, persevering in face of awful circumstances, which works perfectly for Inej.

So those are my Inej picks! I hope you enjoyed them, I would love to know what you thought. Also, if you have any picks of your own, I’d love to hear them. Also, please let me know if you have any requests for these!
