The Minis: All of Emma Mills’ books

A different kind of mini reviews post. 

It’s very hard to be able to review all of the author’s books in one go. Sometimes, they’re Stephen King and write books in their sleep, which means you would maybe get to review a tenth of his work before you’re in tears. The man has a lot of books. And sometimes, people’s books tend to be very different and you can’t really mash them together. This isn’t the case with Emma Mills.

I read all of her books back to back a couple of days ago, and I loved every single one of them. Her books are very similar in tone and in themes, and there’s only three of them (which is the saddest thing ever) so I thought it’d be great to do a mini reviews post for them. Emma Mills writes amazing characters, friendships, romances and does group dynamics so well. And I love that. So here we go.

This is maybe my least favorite of the three, but I still think it’s amazing. This is a loose (very loose) Pride and Prejudice retelling (yes!) with some football, Friday Night Lights kind of vibe to it (double yes!). I really loved what the author did with that dynamic and how she managed to make a really fresh thing out of it.

Devon, our main character, is an incredibly judgmental character, and at first she seems like this really unlikable protagonist. Which I loved. However, the author continues to prove her wrong and to break apart her judgmental attitudes and I really loved that. Devon tends to judge some girls based on the way they look, and I loved that the author called bullshit on that and just showed that the problem was Devon, and not the girls. I also loved the friendships in this book. From Devon learning to live with and love her cousin Foster, to her friendship with Lindsey, it was all done so well. Plus, Ezra, the love interest, was super broody and I loved the romance.

Rating: 4.5 stars 

This is her second book, and probably my second favorite. However, our main character Sloane, is probably my favorite of all three heroines. She tends to hide her feelings and to use humor as a defense mechanism which is really relatable to me, so instantly loved that. More importantly, I loved the cast of characters in this. There were so many wonderful characters here, from Sloane’s dad who is a romance fiction writer that becomes really invested in a werewolf tv show fandom (yes, that is brilliant), to Frank who is a force of nature – all of the characters are really well developed and you can’t help but love them.

Like I said, Emma Mills is really good at writing group dynamics, and she really nailed that in this one. I loved all of the friendships in this, and all of the nuances of it. This also focuses on art and has a really interesting plot related to art and I really loved that. Also, this book has LGBT rep, which was so nice to see, since the first one didn’t. And again, the love interest is cute and the romance is even cuter.

Rating: 4.5 stars

This is the first one I read, but her latest one, and it’s arguably my favorite. I loved our heroine here as well. Claudia is a reserved person, who prefers being on the sidelines, and I really enjoyed her as a character.

This book has some of the nicest family dynamic I read in a while. I loved Clauida’s siblings and their relationship was so well done. And they all play a MMORPG game together and are really nerdy, which was brilliant. And this has amazing friendships in it. From Claudia’s childhood best friend to Iris, an unlikely friendship started on a really wrong foot and built upon a boy band (I know), every single one of the friendships in here was so well done. Also, the love interest in this one was my fave. Gideon is a charming, ridiculous person and I really loved him. And this was probably the most diverse out of the three books, so that’s great.

So if you like great female friendships (not just female, but you get it), great characters you can root for and cute romance subplots, I highly recommend you check out Emma Mills. I really loved all of her books, and can’t recommend them enough!
