School started and I can’t finish a book.
School started and it hit me pretty hard, pretty fast. I already have more stuff to do than I ever had this on in the year, so naturally my reading has slowed down. I have started a few books but I am not gonna finish them soon. So I’d thought I’d tell you about them and how I am feeling so far and what not.
1. Traitor’s Blade by Sebastian de Castell
I am probably only 70 pages into this and so far so good. This is a first book in a series and it has a very Three Musketeers vibe. SO far, I am enjoying the characters, I find them to be rather charming and funny. I also really like how the author handles fight scenes. They are really intricate and detailed, which brings a lot of vividness to his writing and the overall tone of the book. It’s been a slow read for me so far, but I am rather enjoying it.
2. Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody
I am maybe 30 percent into this one and I am kind of meh about it to be perfectly honest. This is a YA Fantasy that is set in a sort of magical City of Sin. I think the concept is really intriguing and everything the author does with is fun, however, I am not too keen on the execution. The exposition isn’t really elegant and the characters are so far falling really flat for me. Moreover, the world beyond this particular city isn’t built upon at all, which I find annoying. I am, however, only it the first third of the book, so I am hoping things pick up for me.
3. Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado
I’ve been meaning to pick this one up for ages and I am so glad I finally did. This is a short story collection centered on women and their bodies. So far, all of the stories I read have been great and I really enjoyed them. Machado’s writing is absolutely stunning and the themes and ideas she explores are so well done. The stories aren’t obvious, they’re pretty meta and I am so far in love with it. Can’t wait to see what rest of the stories hold.
And that’s a quick reading update from me. I would love to hear what you’re reading right now and how are you liking it so far! Let me know in the comments!
