Let’s judge some books by the cover, shall we?
Every month, I pick some books with pretty covers and then I show the ones with best blurbs to you.
Basically, I spend a lot of time on Netgalley, and scouring the Internet for new releases, so I am gonna do that, but pick the books based on their cover. Then I’ll read the blurbs and pick my favorites and then I share them with all of you!
So the basic formula of this post is pretty books meets new releases I am excited about.
ALSO, I am doing a new thing this month! Yay, innovation! And I need your help. I am going to be running a POLL in which you can pick which of these books I am going to be reading in June. It’s a fun way to explore these titles and you can then get a review and see if these books are as good as they look and sound. The poll is at the very end of the post!
1. Moonsoon Mansion: A Memoir by Cinelle Barnes
Release Date: May 1st
Why I love the cover: There’s something so magical about it. I think it looks so dreamy and whimsical and I just really love it.
Why I love the blurb: This is a memoir about Cinelle Barnes’ childhood in the Philippines. It’s centered around a house (hence the mansion) and her complicated relationship with her mother after her father leaves them in wake of a monsoon. It sounds like she uses some fantastical elements to either tell this story or to cope with the problems she faced. Either way, this sounds fascinating and I am really looking forward to picking it up.
2. The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang
Release Date: May 1st
Why I love the cover: IT’S SO ELEGANT. I know I usually go for vibrant, colorful covers, but this one really caught my eye. I love that smoke effect on it and I love that it’s so wispy. I also love that there’s a warrior with a bow who is also a POC on the cover. Yes, please. It’s just a striking cover.
Why I love the blurb: I literally can’t believe that no one has talked about this book and that I haven’t seen it before. It’s compared to N.K. Jemisin and Robin Hobb, both great authors to be compared to. And this is inspired by 20th century China, it has a military school and a kick ass female protagonist and it’s ALL BRILLIANT.
3. Tiny Infinities by J.H. Diehel
Release Date: May 8th
Why I love the cover: Quite possibly my favorite one in this post. I just think it’s GORGEOUS. The colors, the sparkles, the very magic of it – I am in love.
Why I love the blurb: This is a Middle Grade novel and it sounds so completely heartwarming and beautiful. It’s about a summer in Alice’s life, when her dad moves out and leaves her with her troubled mother. She focuses all her energy on breaking her swim team’s record and meets a new friend, Harriet, who’s equally obsessed, but instead with a science fair. And Alice gets a babysitting job where she takes care of Piper, who is supposedly mute, until Alice hears her speak. It’s about family and friends and proving yourself AND it’s in a Middle Grade novel, so I have high hopes for this!
4. The Ensemble by Aja Gabel
Release Date: May 15th
Why I love the cover: This is such a me cover. It’s vibrant, it’s colorful, there’s flowers… I can just stare at it. Good stuff.
Why I love the blurb: “The addictive novel about four young friends navigating a cutthroat world and their complex relationships with each other, as ambition, passion, and love intertwine over the course of their lives.” As with the cover, this is so me. There’s a group of friends and we do a deep dive into their COMPLEX relationships with each other. It’s a trope I thrive on, and honestly, I can’t get enough of these premise. And there’s music. I mean, it’s the perfect book for me.
5. Mother of Invention by Caeli Wolfson Widger
Release Date: May 22nd
Why I love the cover: Because I find it both unnerving and beautiful at the same time.
Why I love the blurb: This story follows Tessa, who is a scientist and she uses technology to transform women’s lives. She develops a program which cuts down pregnancy from 9 months to 9 weeks, and leads to numerous improvements regarding the experience of women during pregnancy. Naturally, something goes wrong. I think it’s a fascinating premise, and I also quite enjoy the twist on the usual futuristic feminist novel, like we saw with The Handmaiden’s Tale or The Power. This really intrigues me and I really want to get to it.
And those are the books! Hope you love the covers and the blurbs as much as I do! Don’t forget to vote on which of these I should read in June and don’t forget to ENTER THE GiVEAWAY I am hosting.

Those are probably my faves, premise and content wise (aka the less important aspect of a book as compared to the cover 😂)

Tbh, I didn’t even read the blurbs, I’ll admit it, I was there to judge solely on cover 🙈😂 but I’ve just read the blurbs now and I really like the sound of The Poppy War!

Mmm, I love the charcoal-esque look of Mother of Invention, and although Poppy War isn’t ordinarily my aesthetic either, it’s so lovely and breezy! And the cover for Tiny Infinities IS very beautiful, and the blurb sounds just as sweet; the fact it’s a middle-grade read makes it even better. 😉 Terrific picks! 😀
