Series I Need to Get To in 2019

I need to get better at finishing series.

I have been a huge series reader for forever. I love series and would always choose them over standalones. When I was younger, however, I use to read series back-to-back and be done with them. But as I got more involved in the community, as I started blogging, there were always so many books out there, that I always just start a series and never go back to it. So I am here to hold myself accountable and to share with you the series I need to either finish or catch up with in 2019!

1. The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski

I read the first book in the series, The Winner’s Curse, this year and I really loved it. It’s a Fantasy with an accent on Romance and I really enjoyed it for what it was. I think Kestrel is one of the best heroines in YA, and I really love and relate to her a lot. So I am super excited to see where the story goes and how it develops. I have a full review for The Winner’s Curse HERE, if you’re interested.

2. The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden

I read The Bear and the Nightingale at the beginning of the year and I totally fell in love with the feel and the atmosphere of the book. Moreover, Vasya is an amazing character and the story is steeped in Slavic and Russian folklore and myths, so I absolutely love that. I have heard that the series gets better with each book, so I am so hyped to get to it. If you want to know more of my thoughts, they can be located HERE.

3. Greatcoats Series by Sebastien de Castell

Surprise, surprise, another book I read at the beginning of the year, loved and did not continue on. I was completely obsessed with Traitor’s Blade. There’s so much humor, the fighting scenes are to die for and the plot is really exciting and fast paced. Plus, the characters are awesome. Highly recommend this one. My review for it can be found HERE.

4. The Wrath and the Dawn Duology by Renee Ahdieh

I wasn’t obsessed with The Wrath and the Dawn, but I loved the writing in it and I liked the tension between the two main characters a lot. And I want to see how this wraps up. If it were a longer series, I am not sure I would want to finish it, but since I have only one book to go, I would find it annoying not to. And I mean, who can resist those covers? Not me. If you’re wondering how I felt about the book, you can find my thoughts HERE.

5. The Illuminae Files by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

I recently read Illuminae, the first book, and I am absolutely obsessed. I feel like the format of this book really works to its advantage and made me like it infinitely more than I would otherwise. And I cannot wait to see where this goes from here. I know that the other books follow different characters so that’s something I am looking forward to. Highly recommend this one too, and if you want to know more of my thoughts, my review is HERE.

6. The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson

You all know how much I love Brandon Sanderson, and while this isn’t my favorite series by him and while the first book really took some effort to get into, I am still really excited to get caught up on this series, since I loved the second half of The Way of Kings. And Sanderson just does world building seamlessly and the world of The Stormlight Archive is so interesting, so I can’t wait to see more. My review for The Way of Kings can be found HERE.

7. The Dark Artifices by Cassandra Clare

The Dark Artifices definitely has my favorite Cassandra Clare cast of characters and it’s probably her best-written book ever. I enjoyed Lady Midnight for what it was, but did not fall head over heels in love with it. However, the hype surrounding Queen of Air and Darkness definitely convinced me that I have to get caught up on this series. I am excited to finish it off in 2019 and even more excited for The Last Hours to come out! My review for Lady Midnight can be found HERE.

8. The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss

I adored The Name of the Wind so much. The writing is breathtaking, I love how the main character Kvothe is written and the story has one of the best magic systems I have ever read about. It’s a story of epic proportions and I cannot wait to see where the story goes on from here. I can’t wait to see the magic develop as Kvothe gets older. It’s gonna be amazing. Really excited to get to The Wise Man’s Fear. If you want to know more of my thoughts on The Name of the Wind, you can do so HERE.

9. Gentleman Bastard Sequence by Scott Lynch

If you did not know, I was obsessed with The Lies of Locke Lamora. Locke is one of the most compelling characters I ever read about, and this series is so clever and so well executed. If you liked Six of Crows, and want something similar but in Adult Fantasy, this series is perfect for you. I love the characters so much and I cannot wait to see what happens next. I am scared and excited.

10. The Trials of Apollo by Rick Riordan

I love Rick Riordan’s books, and after being underwhelmed by the first book in the Magnus Chase series (which I need to reread), I picked up The Hidden Oracle and loved it. Apollo is ridiculous and charming and it’s such a fun character to read about. I did not like The Dark Prophecy as much as I wanted to, but I still really want to continue on with the series and see where it goes. I want to fall in love with the series again, and I know everyone loved The Burning Maze so I am excited.

addAnd those are my top priorities for 2019 when it comes to series! I am excited to dive into these and finally get caught up! Have you read any of these? Any thoughts? Let me know!

  1. I can’t wait until Winter of the Witch is published. There are a few series that I want to continue/finish reading in 2019. I’ll be listing those in an upcoming post.

  2. ooh, great post! I’ve been wanting to try out The Winner’s Curse series out myself; I hear such great things about it all the time. I think the covers put me off a bit…

    1. Thank you so much! Really? I love those covers 😂 Kestrel is a fantastic main character (one of the best in YA in my opinion) but be wary of the fact that it’s romance heavy and it’s not that great in the world building department, but it’s a lot of fun 😊

  3. I just picked up Brandon Sanderson’s The Way of Kings, which is going to be my first book of his that I’ve read. I’m a bit intimidated by getting started with such a prolific and much-loved fantasy author, but I’ve been craving some adult high fantasy, so figured it was time to give it a go.

  4. Oh, I definitely need to get around to the Dark Artifices series as well! I’ve been doubtful of picking up Cassie Clare’s books since I never liked City of Bones, but my friends have convinced me to pick up TID and TDA and I’m not sure how to feel about that 😅 And oh god… The Burning Maze will absolutely destroy you if you’re a huge fan of Rick’s books — I was spoiled and I still sobbed so… have fun!! 😂😭

    1. I was sceptical about picking up The Dark Artifices but I think it’s Cassie Clare’s best written series and definitely my fave cast of characters, so I hope you love it! I AM SO SCARED FOR BURNING MAZE, everyone’s warning me AND I AM NOT READY 😂
