Ultimate Backlist TBR for 2019

The time has come to finally read these books.

I have seen a lot of people do these lists (for example, Rachel @ Pace, Amore, Libri did an amazing one), and I decided I need to compile a list of my own. I did not do this in previous reading years, so I think it’s gonna be a fun new thing to do yearly. Anyways, these books have been put off for so long, it’s only time I get to them finally. I made a list of 12, just so I can do one a month so we keep it sensible. Here are 12 books I must read in 2019:

1

  • The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller – I’ve had this book for ages, and I have zero explanations as to why it’s still unread. Plus, all my friends love it and recommend it all the time, so this one has to be read finally so I can cry about it.
  • The Secret History by Donna Tartt – It’s a book about evil pretentious college students. It’s basically my whole aesthetic. I want and need to love this book so bad. It sounds like the perfect pick for me.
  • Uprooted by Naomi Novik – Dark fairytale setting! A sort of Beauty and the Beast vibe! It’s supposedly amazing and everyone loves it so it’s only logical for me to have the same experience.
  • Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie – I really love and respect Adichie and I loved some of her non-fiction writing, so I think it will be the same with this one. I think Americanah is going to be awesome, and it focuses on a relationship so it’s basically a given that I’ll be obsessed.

2

  • The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood – This one is a classic and I really want to be able to talk about it and have it read. I watched the first couple of episodes of the TV show and I did really enjoy them, so I hope I have the same experience with the book
  • My Brilliant Friend by Elena Ferrante – This series has a female friendship at its center and everyone is obsessed with and I know I will be too. I just have to read it.
  • The Vegetarian by Han Kang – I really need to see what the fuss is about with this one. I have no idea if it will be my kind of book, but I have high hopes.
  • This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab – I wasn’t obsessed with Vicious but I love the premise of this story, with bad deeds making monsters out of people. Sounds so good.

3

  • Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake – Sisters with powers fight for the throne. It sounds dark and epic and I need it in my life.
  • The Fifth Season by N.K. Jemisin – This book was handpicked for me by a book subscription based on my reading tastes, so that means I will love it and I need it.
  • The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner – This is one of the most popular YA Fantasy series and it comes recommended by some epic people, like Susan Dennard, so I should have read it by now.
  • Jade City by Fonda Lee – An Urban Fantasy with djinn! I am already obsessed and I should have read it AGES ago.

And that’s my 2019 backlist TBR! I will be picking one of these at random in the beginning of each month and I am going to need you all to hold me accountable to read these! I am really excited to get to them.

addLet me know if you have read any of these and what were your thoughts and feelings on them. And also, let me know what’s your number one backlist priority for 2019!

  1. Great list! And I love this idea overall. A few of these are on my TBR too. And hey if you read The Handmaids Tale soon you’ll be done in time for the sequel to come out!

  2. A few of these are on my priority list too – The Song of Achilles, Uprooted, Three Dark Crowns and The Handmaid’s Tale. I was meant to read them this year but that didn’t happen so I’m hoping 2019 will be the year to read them all.
Out of the others, the only one I have read is This Savage Song and I really liked it. It’s not my favourite VE Schwab book but it was still good and certainly worth reading. Some others don’t share my opinion but I think the sequel “Our Dark Duet” is better and takes everything in This Savage Song to a whole new level.

  3. I’ve only read the Handmaid’s Tale from that list and it wasn’t a book I would ever recommend. I really need to read the Fifth Season. My friend had two copies of book 2 and gave it to me so I’m going to have to start the series in 2019.

      1. Well, to be fair, two of those reads were because I studied the book at a level and then I re-read it when the series started to see if my opinion had changed. I disliked it more the most recent time but it’s not actually a hard book to read because I find there’s so little actual substance to it if you try to look at it deeper than surface level.

  4. I thought I was the last one to read The Song of Achilles. It seems like everyone has already read it, and Circe as well, since I saw it popping up in a lot of favorites-of-the-year lists. I still have to pick up both of them, though The Song of Achilles is my main priority.
Probably the ‘oldest’ book I have sitting on my shelves at the moment is the Dark Material series by Phillip Pullman. This is probably everyone’s childhood favorites, but I’m only getting around to it now. Well, better late than never, right?
I hope you enjoy all these backlist titles as much as everyone else! ✨

    1. I hope we both love those two! Yeah, I am excited about Spinning Silver too, but this one has been sitting on my TBR for longer. We’ll see – I’ve read mixed reviews on it. Oh that’s great to hear, I am really excited to get to them.

  5. The Fifth Season and The Song of Achilles are two I need to get to too. Although I just bought Song this month and don’t even own Fifth Season yet so I probably can’t claim them as backlist titles 😂. I finished The Handmaid’s Tale a few days ago, and it wins the award for most underwhelming, overhyped book of all time, o I’ve got angry mad review coming in 2019 for that one!! I will not be reading the sequel or watching the show, so much anger, haha!

  6. Aaahh I’m planning on reading The Song of Achilles in 2019, but for the second time (since I read it this year and fell in love with it lmao)! And I also want to read The Fifth Season — I’ve only heard of it this year but it sounds so good and my friends have loved it!

  7. This is SUCH a great list, I’m so excited to see a ton of my faves on here! I am POSITIVE you will love The Secret History so I’m especially excited about that one. Good luck with reading all of these!!
