8 for March 8th: My Absolute Favorite Female Characters

Last year, I did a list of books by female authors that were about women and their experiences and I figured I should do a post to celebrate the day this year as well.

I decided that I should do my favorite female characters of all time, because I haven’t done one in a while and there’s no time like today to do it! So let’s jump into it.

The Witchlands by Susan Dennard

Iseult is one of my absolute faves, and she is probably the character I identify with the most. I love how intelligent and introspective she is, and I adore her witchery so much. On top of all of that, she tries really hard to keep her cool and to always seem put together and to hide away her emotions, which is something that I can totally relate to. I also love her character growth, her journey to accepting who she is and finding her place and I just love her a lot.

The Folk of the Air by Holly Black

I have never fallen in love with a character more quickly than I did with Jude. I think she is so smart and capable and such a fighter and a survivor. She fights for herself and what she believes in and she will stop at nothing to achieve her goals. She is just a badass. I just love her so much.

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

You all already know how much I love Nina. She is by far my favorite crow and I just adore her on so many levels. She is fierce and outspoken and a soldier and just so important. I would probably die for her.

Of course, Inej is on this list. I think she is such a complex and layered character. I love how quiet and unassuming she is and how that contrasts how deadly she is and how dangerous. She is also a survivor, who fights for herself and for others she loves and I just think Inej is wonderful.

Stay With Me by Ayobami Adebayo

This book (review can be found HERE) stayed with me (yup, I did that) for long after I finished it and it’s all because of Yejide. She is this stunning, complex, deeply flawed character, but her flaws make her seem so real and have the reader pulling for her at all times. I loved reading about her fears and doubts about herself and her place in the world and how she felt when she could not have children. It was all stunning and I love her and I think she is one of the best written female characters I ever read about.

We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver

I cannot help but love Eva. She is one of the most troubling, complex, flawed and real female characters I ever read about. She is unlikable but she is also a character you cannot help but love and root for. I think she embodies all the struggles and doubts women who don’t want children must be faced with and I just adore her character a lot. Lionel Shriver is MESSY and I won’t probably ever pick up a book by her again because of that, but I cannot help loving Eva.

Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling

I know that this is everyone’s favorite character and I also don’t care.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

I especially really love the fandom version of Lizzie’s character. I feel like there’s the Jane Austen text and then I feel like the character grows beyond that, through all the adaptations and retellings of this story. I adore Lizzie Bennet in the 2005 movie version and she is just this stunning character who I will love forever.
