Top Ten Tuesday: Podcasts I Love and You Will Too

toptentuesday

Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish in June of 2010 and was moved to That Artsy Reader Girl in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together.

Each Tuesday, there’s a theme, and we do fun lists for each theme and talk books! This week’s topic:

march26th

I love podcasts and I have previously talked about my favorite bookish ones HERE! However, I listen to a bunch of different podcasts so I am here today to give you some recommendations! Let’s get into it!

1. Serial

This is arguably THE podcast that made podcasting fun and cool again. Serial is a documentary podcast series, where each season, the host explores one true story. The first season was phenomenal and it looked into the case of Adnan Sayed, who was convicted of murdering his ex-girlfriend in 1999, when he was still in high school. It’s a deep dive into that season’s case and it’s fascinating and absolutely addictive. It’s really well produced and thought out, so I cannot recommend it enough if you’re a fan of true crime podcasts!

2. S-Town

It’s an investigative journalism podcast, and its focus is an exploration of a small town in Alabama. The central figure of the podcast is John McLemore, who contacted the author, Brian, to look into an unsolved murder in his hometown. But the podcast is more focused on John and it’s really amazing. It has only seven episodes and it’s worth a listen.

3. My Dad Wrote a Porno

Image result for my dad wrote a pornoThis one is a lot more light-hearted and fun, and it’s absolutely hilarious. It’s exactly what the title says – the host’s dad wrote an erotic fiction novel (a really, really bad one) and Jamie, the host, alongside his two friends, reads a chapter of the book on each podcast and then he and his co-hosts comment on it. If you are looking for something really funny, I highly recommend this one. The episodes are short and engaging and you will undoubtedly have fun with this.

4. Dirty John

Image result for dirty john podcastAnother really famous true crime podcast that was recently made into a series, Dirty John explores the story of Debra Newell, who meets a man named John, who seems like the perfect guy. Except her family doesn’t like him, and the whole thing starts to get really complicated. Again, a really well produced and thought out podcast that will definitely make you want to keep listening. And then you can watch the tv series!

5. Believed

Image result for believed podcastThis is a nine episode podcast about Larry Nassar, an Olympic gymnastics doctor that abused hundreds of women and girls for almost two decades. The podcast is an inside look at how these women won the case against Nassar and it’s also an exploration of the cultural moment of women finding and reclaiming their power with a case like this. Highly recommended.

6. Hey, Cool Job!

Image result for hey cool job podcastHey, Cool Job! is a podcast about really cool jobs! This is a bit of an older one (it’s from 2015) but it’s a great one to dip in and out of and pick the episodes that seem interesting to you. There’s an episode about a porn star, about a war reporter, about a celebrity paparazzo, about cannabis growers… It’s a really interesting look at the stuff people do and it’s a lot of fun.  Oh and the host is Mary H. Choi, who wrote Emergency Contact!

7. In the Dark

Image result for in the dark podcastAgain, another true crime podcast! The first season focuses on the investigation of a missing boy, an investigation that was botched by law enforcement and that became one of the most infamous abduction cases ever. And then in the second season, it turns to the case of Curtis Flowers, who was convicted of a quadruple murder he claims he did not commit. It’s a really interesting podcast, especially if you like looking into how investigations can go wrong. Again, highly recommended.

8. Hidden Brain

Image result for hidden brain podcastIf you like pop science books, you will love this. This is a podcast that uses science and storytelling to reveal some unconscious patterns that drive human behavior. It’s a really interesting podcast with episodes that can be really interesting, and again, it’s one of those that you can dip in and out of and pick and choose the episodes that appeal to you. And it’s again, more lighthearted than most of these.

9. Reply All

Image result for reply all podcastThis is another fun one! This is a podcast about the internet. Each episode does a deep dive on a weird thing on the internet. It’s super cool. If you’re fascinated by how our world works and how the internet shapes that, I highly recommend this one. It’s super fun and engaging.

10. The Dropout

Image result for the dropout podcastLastly, this is another newer podcast that follows the story of Theranos and more specifically, Elizabeth Holmes. If you’ve heard of or read the book Bad Blood then you might be familiar with this case, but Theranos was a multi-billion dollar start up that managed to get a lot of people to invest in it – only to be revealed that their technology doesn’t really work. It’s super interesting and I would definitely suggest looking into this case – it’s fascinating!

Those are all podcasts I love and would highly recommend! As always, I am looking for recommendations so if you have any – sound off in the comments! And let me know if you enjoyed this post!

  1. I’m super glad you just made this post because I’ve literally just started listening to podcasts again and I was out of ideas on who to listen to ! I’ve only been listening to Views by David Dobrik and Jason Nash (love that one, it’s pretty goofy and there’s not really a theme). A while ago, I used to listen to Rookie (it’s from the online zine and it was pretty good) and 2 Dope Queens (absolutely hilarious) ! I’ve heard about Serial before, it’s so popular ! Hey, Cool Job ! seems SO COOL ! I’ll deffo give Hidden Brain and Reply All a try ! Xx ❤️

  2. I first heard of Serial yesterday from two of my co-workers and now I have seen it on several lists today. Sounds like it must be something worth taking a look at

  3. Such a good list! I love podcasts and am always down to find new ones to listen to! If you liked Dirty John, you should definitely listen to Dr. Death if you haven’t already! It’s by the same company that made Dirty John, and is about the Texas neurosurgeon who was v incompetent.

  4. I really need to get deeper in the world of podcasts, because I feel like I’d learn a lot! I do love docummentaries, but I never watch things related to true crime because I feel like some elements can be triggering for me, so I don’t think I’ll be able to take most of these recommendations. Notheless, the last one about Theranos really interests me! I’m really in the mood to find more about popular scam cases. Recently, I watched the Netflix docummentary on the Fyre Festival and it was extremely fascinating. It was also a huge scam at the end, so I can see it relating well to The Dropout. Thanks for sharing! 💫
