Welcome to the newest installment in my Reading Lists Feature, a series of posts where I compose reading lists for and inspired by different characters. These are all books that I feel fit into the character’s aesthetic and personality, but also books I feel those characters would love to read. You can check the previous posts (Ronan Lynch, Hermione, Ron, Kaz Brekker, Nina Zenik, Harry Potter, Luna Lovegood, Inej Ghafa, Iseult det Midenzi, Adam Parrish, Jude St. Francis, Sansa Stark, Wylan Van Eck, Arya Stark, Gansey, Blue Sargent and Jude Duarte) HERE.
This series took a slight break because I feel like I’ve exhausted my pool of characters I love and books I could assign to them and on top of that, I think people got bored of the feature itself. Which is fine! But I finally found new characters I love and adore, so I figured it’d make sense to do a reading list inspired by them.
And my love for Alex Claremont-Diaz knows no boundaries. Alex is probably going to be one of my favorite characters of the year, and I just love how confident and loud he is. He is opinionated and ambitious and sometimes stand-offish but he has so much heart and he is a wonderful friend who is always there. I just love him a lot. So here are some books I think Alex would enjoy, but that also fit his character really well. So here we go:
1. Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
I feel like Alex would love the subtle ATLA vibes this series gives and also, I feel like he would be a big adventure Fantasy fan, because I feel he would love the action-packed, non-stop pace, which is why this book would work perfectly for him. Also, this is really political and explores racism in a Fantasy setting, so I think he would also love that aspect. It’s a great pick for him.
2. The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee
Again, a huge historical adventure romp around Europe, with slight Fantasy elements that would be right up Alex’s alley. I also feel like he could relate a lot to Monty because they’re both really confident and loud and boisterous but also squishy and soft on the inside. We stan. Also, this book takes on a lot of different important issues – from sexuality, to racism, to mental health and it’s really an all around amazing book and I think Alex could find a lot to love in it.
3. Fence by C.S. Pacat and Johanna the Mad
I think Alex would love comics because they are quicker and don’t require a lot of reading time and focus. And Fence is a wonderful one that has a great diverse cast of characters, it’s super fun and easy going, but it’s also really angsty so basically it’s a great Alex pick is what I am saying.
4. Release by Patrick Ness
This is one of the more serious picks on the list, but it’s just a stunning novel, and I think Alex would love it. There are great discussions in here about sexuality and family and obligations, but also wonderful explorations of friendship and coming to terms with who you are. I think it’s a deeply moving novel and Alex could find a lot of things to love about it.
5. Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff
I feel like Alex would be obsessed with the format of this book and I also think he would find Aidan hilarious. It’d be his favorite character, no doubt. And again, this is a really fun, fast-paced adventure, with high stakes and a really unique style of storytelling which Alex would appreciate.
6. Bad Blood by John Carreyrou
Finally, I feel like Alex would be a huge non-fiction fan and this book is just mind-blowingly outrageous and Alex would love it. The story is banana pants crazy and I think Alex would really want to look into it and then he would constantly talk about it.
And that’s my reading list for the wonderful Alex Claremont-Diaz! I would love to hear from you – do you like my choices? Any books you would recommend for Alex? Any character requests? Should I do one for Henry? Let me know ALL the things in the comments.
